Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
