Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official said the attack left him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
