Britain and America have hammered out a major commercial pact that will maintain no tariffs on UK medicine products entering the US market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to raise spending on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that tariffs on these key products will stay at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This development follows earlier statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases floated as high as double the cost.

"This agreement with the UK strengthens the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue equity to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a release said.

Economic Impact

Medicines are one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is clearly the largest destination for large UK drugmakers.

Export figures reveal that in the one-year period leading up to September, the UK sold drugs worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount accounted for nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that period.

"This deal safeguards jobs, increases investment and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," a minister commented.

Key UK Commitments

The pact involves several notable pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to increase total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments topped 20%.

Broader Context

This agreement comes amid a long-running row between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were heightened by claims that American customers were paying significantly more for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several significant manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while substantial expansions have been announced toward US facilities.

A senior figure stated that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its total funding over the last ten years.
