The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k award cash to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his new release his work was chosen as the top album of the past year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted financial assistance in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

He is not the first artist to give his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when the band earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her prize among several charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," she told the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners they donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who purchase "shares" in the venues.
