EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
