Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' if American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, further raising tensions in their relations after US forces struck Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Growing Tensions and Accusations

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Trump threatened analogous armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation is “very sick too” and “run by a sick man who enjoys creating cocaine and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the trade.

A Frayed Partnership

The country was historically a key ally of the United States in the struggle against narcotics trade and received bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have soured markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Defiant Answer

In response to a query whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a narco," he affirmed.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he wrote in a post.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will become numerous insurgents in the mountains. If they capture the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians admires and supports, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting a new constitution in 1991 and later became a prominent senator. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the presidency.

"I swore to never again hold arms again ... but for Colombia I will take up the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's security detail was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have condemned the threats of a US attack on Colombia.

Political and Economic Strains

Washington withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged US troops to refuse any illegal orders. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

Concurrently while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out strikes against vessels off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
